From Hazardous to Hopeful
KOPC Workforce Development Partners with the City of Biloxi and MSU Coastal Research and Extension Center to Analyze Hazardous Waste in East Biloxi
KOPC Workforce Development is introducing a new initiative to address hazardous waste concerns in the East Biloxi community. This program aims to educate community members, homeowners, and workforce development students on recognizing hazardous waste and ensuring safety when managing it.

Our goal is to collaborate with hazardous waste officials, community members, and policymakers to leverage and deploy effective and equitable strategies for hazardous waste disposal, storage, and detection.
Leading this initiative, KOPC's Future Coastal Leaders Fellow, Nicole Ricketts is developing a comprehensive curriculum on the inspection, handling, and disposal of household hazardous waste. Our program will host community engagement events, including symposiums, classes, and workshops, to raise awareness and empower residents to address this critical environmental justice issue.

KOPC Workforce Development students will contribute by gathering data on hazardous waste in local homes and communities, identifying overlooked hazards such as corroded batteries, motor oil, and chlorine bleach.
As part of the initiative, five homes in the East Biloxi area will be surveyed to assess hazardous waste on their properties. Students will also assist in constructing storage units for safe household hazardous waste storage, ensuring these residents have access to proper solutions.
Through education, community engagement, and hands-on support, this initiative aims to build a more resilient and environmentally conscious East Biloxi.
